Kelley, Leesburg Hold Off Wolfson 89-85, February 23, 2001

February 23, 2001|By Joe Williams of The Sentinel Staff

JACKSONVILLE -- Leesburg overcame a disastrous start to the second half to beat Jacksonville Wolfson 89-85 Thursday night in a boys basketball regional quarterfinal playoff game.

Leesburg (27-5), ranked seventh in the Class 5A Florida Sports Writers Association Poll, won the game thanks to the junior guard Brandon Kelley, who had the biggest scoring night in his career, and senior Marlyn Bryant, who made clutch baskets down the stretch.

With the victory, the Yellow Jackets advance to Tuesday night's Class 5A, North Region 1 semifinal against the winner of the Bay County-Fort Walton Beach Game.

Kelley finished with a career-high of 37 points and Bryant, playing on a sprained left ankle, had 14 points.

"Without Marlyn, we know we have to pick it up,'' Kelley said. "I felt like any time I touched the ball, I could score.

"But it was an entire team effort.''

Kelley's performance was matched by Wolfson's Will Holoman, who also had 37 points.
"I knew he [Holoman] was good, but I didn't realize he could create his own shots that easily,'' Leesburg Coach Chad Keller said.

Leesburg was leading 53-47 entering the third quarter, but committed four turnovers in the first 1:16 seconds at seven in the first 302 of the period.

That keyed a big 20-4 run by Wolfson (27-4), which entered the game ranked fifth in the state. Wolfson took its first lead of the night on a basket by Holoman with 6:44 remaining in the third period.

The game was reminiscent of Saturday night's district final, when Leesburg entered the fourth quarter with a 13-point lead, but lost to Belleview on a last-second basket.

"We were talking about that we weren't going to let it happen again,'' Kelley said.

"We let the Belleview game get away from us, and we weren't going to let that happen tonight.''
Bryant, who re-injured his left ankle when he appeared to slip on a wet spot on the floor earlier in the fourth period, came through in the end.

He scored seven straight points, including two on an offensive rebound with 1:32 remaining, to give Leesburg the lead for good at 84-83.

Kelley helped Leesburg get to a great start in the game, scoring 25 of his points in the first half.

"Brandon had a phenomenal game,'' Keller said. "Brandon stepped up and came through.

"It was one heck of a ballgame.''

Jackets Advance To State Final Four, March 9, 1928

March 9, 1928

Gainesville, Fla. Mar.9 (AP) - Four teams Andrew Jackson of Jacksonville, Leesburg, Lakeland and St. Petersburg, fought their way through the early rounds of play in the seventh annual high school championship basketball tourney held here to emerge into the semi-final round to be played tomorrow morning.

Andrew Jackson will oppose Leesburg with Lakeland meeting St. Petersburg. The first game is set for 9:30 o'clock with the second following it closely. Ray Dickson's Andrew Jackson Tigers had little trouble in disposing of their two preliminary round opponents, eliminating Fort Pierce 48 to 19, and winning over Archer 37 to 14.

WILLISTON NOT SO EASY

Leesburg took a 34 to 21 decision over Marianna in their morning game but had trouble in disposing of Williston in their game tonight. The Williston outfit presented several good floormen who persistently bothered the Yellow Jackets sharpshooters. However, in a spirited finish they copped the long end of a 29 to 13 verdict.

The Lakeland Dreadnaughts coasted through Sanford in easy fashion, winning handily 35 to 7, but required full steam ahead to dispose of the Palatka Maroons. The Putnam county squad led 7 to 6 at the first period whistle, but the sailors came back to run up 20 to 10 score at the half. A Sanford rally in the final quarter brought the Maroons up to within close distance, but the Dreadnaughts opened up with their artillery and blasted their way to a 35 to 23 victory.

Del Ray showed surprisingly good form in their opening encounter with Plant City and romped away with a 39 to 25 decision, but the big East Coast team fell before the speedy offense produced by the Green Devils outfit by 44 to 19 verdict. The tall rangy lads from Del Ray could not cope with the speed demons on the Petersburg five, who were equally good at short tosses or at long arched shots.

Archer pulled the first upset of the tourney by putting the Monticello outfit away to the tune of 35 to 22 and this game was followed by another dope bucket upset when Williston drop the Lions of Tallahassee 35 to 15.

The Malone - Palatka engagement produced the great thrill of the day's court activities with the Maroons nosing out a 29 to 28 victory. After a close first quarter the Palatka quintet drew away and maintained a safe lead of around 10 points until shortly after the final stanza, when the West Florida aggregation started on a determined drive which quickly brought them to within a few points of the leaders. Two field goals and a found shot left the Maroons in possession of a lone point advantage as the whistle blew.

Leesburg basketball fans those still in Leesburg and not at the scene of hostilities at Gainesville haunted the Commercial office last evening to get first news over the Associated Press Wire of how the home quint happened to be making out against the "class" of the state interschool basketball. Talk seemed to center whether Leesburg's great five could meet and defeat Andrew Jackson. It was conceded that Leesburg had a chance a mighty good chance -- to do this: and once over the hurdle of Andy Jax, it was furthered considered a legitimate hazard that the title would come to Leesburg to grace the half of fame at the high school.

Jackets Win 1928 District Championship, March 4, 1928

No Star Outshines Other On Leesburg Team In Winning

Outplaying Sanford in every phase of a fast, hard fought game, Leesburg Yellow Jackets brought home the bacon in the shape of the fifth district championship, defeating the Celery City boys by the top heavy score of 27 to 10.

It was Leesburg's game all the way with Sanford playing the game of their lives up to the third quarter, when they began to weaken and the Yellow Jackets ran up a total of 13 points during that period.

The first period was almost an even break with Sanford drawing first blood. Maxwell made a horseshoe shot from the center of the floor and Sanford fans began to look for a repetition of the Celery City's luck that had brought them into the finals. That was Sanford's only moment. From that time on the game belonged to Leesburg and Sanford was able to score only three field goals in the entire game.

ALL STARS

To mention one Yellow Jacket as starring would be an injustice to every other man on the team, for the whole team played a machine like passing game that Sanford's defense could not stop. Brown was high point man with 10 points. Cherry scored seven points and Smith six. Cahill dribbled the length of the floor, penetrating the defense and scoring a pretty good shot. Entz just wouldn't let the Celery eaters have a clear shot at the basket and kept them throwing wild throughout the game.

The Semifinal game between Leesburg and Daytona Beach proved to be a struggle but the local boys came through on the long end of a 18 to 8 score. Sanford defeated Groveland in the semifinals by a close score, outlucking the Lake County boys with long shots from all angles.

CUP PRESENTED

In winning the fifth district championship, Leesburg was presented with a very pretty hammered Silver Cup to add to their trophy list and will journey to Gainesville next Friday to compete with the champions of the other district for the state championship.

The mythical all-tournament team picked by the officials of the series and the second choice team included three of the Yellow Jackets and had public sentiment been consulted would have included at least four of the local boys.

The first team included Brown, Leesburg; and Spencer, Sanford as forwards; Maxwell Sanford as center; Cahill, Leesburg, and Daring, Daytona Beach as guards.

The second teams included Pittman, Ocoee, and Myers, DeLand as forwards; Leach Orlando, as center; Entz Leesburg, and Hill, Groveland, as guards.

Post-mortems held after the announcement of the officials as to the membership of the mythical teams were almost unanimous in believing; that Cherry was the outstanding center of the tournament and that if it had not been for Maxwell's spectacular shots from the center of the floor, he would have been named instead.

Bryant Leads Leesburg To Title Game, February 17, 2001

February 17, 2001|By Joe Williams of The Sentinel Staff

OCALA - The flu may have been able to slow Marlyn Bryant, but it couldn't stop him.

Bryant, who spent more time than normal on the bench during Friday night's Class 5A, District 4 semifinal at Central Florida Community College, still scored 18 points to lead the Yellow Jackets to a 73-54 victory over Gainesville (16-14).

The Yellow Jackets (26-4), under first-year Coach Chad Keller and ranked second in the Class 5A Florida Sports Writers Association's state poll and third in the Sentinel Super 6, will meet Belleview in tonight's 7:30 p.m. championship game.

The Diamondback Rattlers defeated Gainesville Buchholz 53-35 in the other semifinal.
"We have several players who have the flu," Keller said. "Marlyn doesn't have it full-fledged, but he was very winded tonight."

Leesburg Boys Stay Perfect In District, January 6, 1999

Balanced Scoring, Led By Marlyn Bryant's 17 Points, Helped The Yellow Jackets Build A Big Lead Against Ocala Forest.

January 06, 1999|By Joe Williams of The Sentinel Staff
LEESBURG - Put Leesburg's victory over Ocala Forest into the taking-care-of-business category.

Leesburg (12-3, 3-0) did what it was expected to do at Ray Hayes Memorial Gymnasium Tuesday night, easily handling the Wildcats (4-9, 0-3) and staying in first place in Class 5A, District 7, with an 88-62 victory.

The game wasn't that close.

``We are in a unique situation we weren't in at this point last year, where we can control our own destiny,'' Leesburg Coach Pat Todd said. ``Everyone in the league has at least one district loss, but we still have some big district games coming up. By no means are we taking anything for granted.''

Forest remained close for the first six minutes of the game and tied the score at 8 when John Wagner scored from inside with 2:10 remaining.

But Leesburg sophomore Marlyn Bryant quickly scored five of Leesburg's next seven points.
