CANDLER - When the Leesburg Yellow Jackets Basketball team lost the Class 4A District 5 Championship game to Lake Weir 76-75 they realize they would have to play on the road throughout the playoffs. When they arrived at Ocala Lake Weir High School 2 hours before tipoff on Tuesday night the parking lot had several hundred Hurricane and Jackets fans trying to find tickets for the Regional Semifinal Matchup. The game was already sold out with a standing room only crowd inside the Lake Weir gymnasium. It would be the fourth meeting between the two top ten teams.
Leesburg Head Coach Marcel Thomas was leading his Jackets, who have only one senior in the starting lineup into gym where the Hurricanes had lost one time this season. He didn't know how his young Jackets would react to such a loud and hostile environment. Sophomore sensation guard Undra Mitchem, Jr. scored 20 points and led Leesburg to a 70-59 victory over Lake Weir. Undra Mitchem, Jr. 6'2"/165 junior guard showed the Lake Weir crowd why he is considered as the #28 ranked player in the state by Florida Hoops 2013 class. Leesburg advances to Saturdays Class 4A Region 2 Championship -- the Florida High School Athletic Association equivalent of college basketball's "Elite Eight." They will face Nature Coast in Brooksville, the winner advances to the State Final Four in Lakeland.

Marcel Thomas the Leesburg High School boys coach, at the traditional powerhouse , had led the Yellow Jackets to a 25-4 record, including a 70-59 win Tuesday against Ocala Lake Weir in the Class 4A-Region 2 semifinals. The Jackets had four players score in double figures

"Our guys came into this game with a chip on their shoulders," Thomas said. "Losing to (Ocala Lake Weir) in the district championship game cancelled out the two regular season wins we had against them. We wanted another chance to play them after that loss."
It was the Yellow Jackets' third win over the 'Canes in four meetings this season, and it was a measure of revenge for Lake Weir's 76-75 upset win in the District 4A-5 Tournament two weeks ago.

"When you get to this level, you've got to bring you're A-game and play good for four quarters and we didn't do that tonight," Lake Weir head coach Mike Surber said. "That was the difference, but that doesn't take anything away from our season. Our guys did a great job."

Leesburg (25-4) held Lake Weir's Dee Lewis in check thanks largely to a punishing zone defense and firm command of the boards by the Jackets Robert Jones. Leesburg finished with a 38-30 rebounding edge, including 10-5 in the decisive second quarter.

The Jackets gain momentum over their hosts with a 12-2 run to end the first half. It turned a 19-18 Lake Weir lead into a 30-21 deficit, and the Hurricanes never got closer than eight points for the rest of the way.
Robert Jones, Leesburg's 6-foot-6 senior center, controlled the boards and held Lake Weir to one shot per possession. Jones finished with a game-high 15 rebounds to go with his 10 points, while his brother 6'5"/175 junior D'mauri Jones added nine boards and 14 points.
"Our guys were committed to getting one stop at a time," Leesburg head coach Marcel Thomas said. "We showed real patience tonight, both on offense in how we attacked the basket, and on defense by getting stops and then getting rebounds."

Lake Weir (23-6) fell behind 47-31, at the end the third quarter. Lake Weir opened the fourth stanza with Jamal Ross scoring a 3 then a Dee Lewis dunk and another 3 by Ross and suddenly the Hurricanes were within 8 and the packed house going wild. Leesburg was forced to take a timeout and Thomas settled his team down during the break in action and Jackets answered with a 6-1 run that extended the lead to 53-40 with about 4 minutes left in the fourth quarter. Lake Weir couldn't answer Leesburg run and the overflow crowd started heading for the exits.

"Our guys understood that a team like Lake Weir, if we don't answer their run then it could get ugly for us," Thomas said. "We knew they'd make a run and we were ready for it."

Senior center Tamarrio Riley kept Lake Weir close with a game-high 21 points and a team-high 11 rebounds. Lewis who scored 29 in the District Championship game and Marion County leading scorer at 20.9 points per game — was hounded by multiple Jacket defenders from start to finish. Through three quarters, the junior guard had just seven points on 2-of-11 shooting, but Lewis rallied late as the Hurricanes refused to surrender and finished with 20 points.
"It's been exciting to see people lined up out in the parking lot," Surber said. "I told the guys, you ought to be proud. The stands are filled up with a lot of people from different schools. It feels good that everybody in Marion County supported us. That's a credit to my kids."

Leesburg was led by Undra Mitchem, who has 20 points, followed by Joe Toolie, who had 16. D'Mauri Jones added 12 points and Robert Jones dropped in 10 points.
Ocala Lake Weir was led by Tamario Riley with 21 points.

Leesburg - Leesburg dismantled the Hurricanes two times in the regular season (78-64 and 72-58) but lost the District 5 game 76-75. Lake Weir celebrated its first district basketball championship in 36 years with that win. Lake Weir High School served up the Cinderella story of the 2011 season last week by winning the program's first district title in 36 years. The last time Lake Weir had won a district title was back in 1975 when Hugh Lindsey's led them to the state championship.

The Hurricanes broke a  9 year playoff drought in 2010 but were eliminated in the regional quarterfinals by Orlando Oak Ridge. The last Lake Weir playoff win came in 1999. The Hurricanes are 10-10 all-time in the state playoffs.

The Yellow Jackets have won 15 of 17 going into tonight's game.

Leesburg is in state regional playoffs for the 26th time and have advanced to the sweet sixteen, eight times in nine appearances since 1998. The Yellow Jackets have appeared in 4 State Final Fours, winning the Class 3A State Championship in 1977. Lake Weir won a 1975 state title after runner-up finishes in 1957 and 1972 but didn't make another state regional appearance until 1999.

“We're looking forward to getting another shot at Leesburg,” Surber said. “They're tough, but we know we can play with them.”

The game is expected to sell out well before this evening opening tipoff.  Leesburg Head Coach Marcel Thomas will bring a young but tested Yellow Jacket team into the hostile Lake Weir Gymnasium.  Leesburg's 69-60 comeback win over Poinciana on the road has given the young Jackets reasons to believe that they pull out a win on the road in Lake Weir. The Jackets have only one senior in their starting lineup Teron Wallace who is averaging 10.5 ppg.

“We knew it was going to be a battle(District 5 championship game),”  Lake Weir's Dee Lewis said. “My dad always told me to stay cool and calm. Big players make big shots.”

“The homecourt advantage is huge,” Surber said. “We've only lost one there all year.”

Lake Weir's Dee Lewis, a 6-3 junior, has 33, 29 and 21 points in three postseason wins. Lewis, who put on a spectacular scoring display throughout the tournament, average 31.3 ppg during the tourney. Lake Weir junior Dee Lewis is virtually unstoppable in the open court and deadly around the basket. So when he starts hitting from the perimeter too, that means it'll probably be a long night for whatever team is trying to stop him.

“That's not coaching, that's just a good athlete,” Lake Weir coach Mike Surber said. “When he's hitting outside that's a bonus because his strength is his penetration. When he's hitting on all cylinders, he's hard to stop.”

Lewis is surrounded by some rock-solid floor game from point guard Jamal Ross (7.9 ppg, 7.8 apg) and equally steady post play from 6-foot-3 senior center Ben Mathews (12.7 ppg, 6.4 rpg).

All of Leesburg starters are ranked in the top 50 in the respective graduating classes by Florida Hoops. The Jackets are led by Joe Toolie, a 6-3 junior point guard 12.5 ppg who also leads the Yellow Jackets in assists at 2.6 per game.

"Joe's the kind of player where if he hits his first two 3s, he's probably going to hit three or four more right after that," Leesburg coach Marcel Thomas said.
6'5"/175 junior wingman D'Mauri Jones is the teams second leading scorer with 10.5 ppg and  is the team rebound leader with 4.1 rpg.

Next: if Leesburg wins it would travel on Saturday to face the winner of the Brooksville Nature Coast (26-3) vs. Wiregrass Ranch (22-7) game.

Leesburg runs past Poinciana in Region 4A-2

Friday, 18 February 2011
By Rick Pedone
Sports Editor

It was a shootout between Poinciana and Leesburg Thursday in the 4A-2 regional playoffs, but one of the Eagles main sharpshooters was injured in the third quarter helping Leesburg to a 67-60 victory.

The Yellow Jackets, 24-4, play Tuesday in the regional semifinal round. Poinciana ended its most successful season at 19-8.

Poinciana was ahead by 12, 50-38, in the third quarter and had wrestled control of a seesaw game when guard Stefan Moody (11 points) went down with an ankle injury.

Without Moody, a 5-9 junior with a 37-inch vertical leap, Poinciana’s offense struggled even though senior guard Osanto Marc had a season-high 33 points and Lex Curry scored 10 as Poinciana regained the lead at 57-56 with 3:50 to play.

The Yellow Jackets, who dominated the glass all night, often getting three and four shots on each trip, pulled ahead as guard D’maury Jones (12) scored four points in a row.

“We were up by like 11, and (Moody) goes up for a rebound and comes down and turns his ankle and has to leave the court,” Poinciana Coach Jay Lunce said. “He tried to get back into it, but he couldn’t go. Like I say, we’re hard to stop when we’re healthy.”

Moody re-entered the game with two minutes to play, but by then Leesburg had all the momentum and ran nine points in a row to build a 65-57 lead.

Marc hit a 3-pointer with 35 seconds to play to pull the Eagles within five, 65-60, but he fouled out 20 seconds later and Leesburg’s Robert Jones (9) dunked to cap the hard-fought win.

“Osanto, he’s stepped up and played well,” Lunce said. “He’s a big asset.”

Teron Wallace, who hit a pair of 3-point shots during Leesburg’s fourth-quarter comeback, led the Jackets with 20 points.

Marc, who transferred to Poinciana from East Ridge, said Leesburg won the game on the boards.
“It was the rebounding. We couldn’t out-rebound them,” he said.

Like his coach, Marc said Moody’s absence for most of the second half made a difference.
“It hurt us a lot. Stefan’s one of our best guards. He gives us a spark when he’s in there,” Marc said.
Moody scored all of his points in the first half, eight in the first quarter.

Poinciana opened the second half on a 9-2 run and led 44-36. Sherwood Vinson scored five points and Paris Greene added four for the Eagles.

Lunce said regardless of the outcome, his team played well against good competition.

“You really can’t ask for anything more. They played hard,” Lunce said. “We didn’t do a bad job shutting them down outside, but we got killed on the boards.”

Life Christian, 19-9, lost at Bradenton Christian, 60-53, Thursday in the A-2 regional quarterfinals.

Leesburg’s Foster commits to Brevard CC

Pedro "P.J." Foster, a 6-foot guard from Leesburg High School, who graduated Friday night, made an oral commitment Monday afternoon to play basketball at Brevard Community College this coming year. Foster, who averaged 13.7 points, 2.1 steals and shot 43 percent from beyond the 3-point line as a senior, is expected to play the point guard position for the Titans.

Playing the point position will be a change for Foster, who has been used primarily as a shooting guard for the Yellow Jackets.

"I think he is just scratching the surface," Leesburg Coach Colt McDowell said. "Pedro is a tremendous shooter and an outstanding athlete. He works hard on basketball and the one thing about him is he is a better person than he is a basketball player."

Foster attended a tryout at Brevard last week and impressed the coaches.

"I felt it [the tryout] went great," Foster said.

Foster is expected to sign with Brevard next Tuesday.

Leesburg Teams Keep Building On Tradition

It's No Surprise That The Boys And Girls Teams Are Ranked Among The State's Best As They Roll Toward Postseason Play.

February 06, 2000|By Joe Williams of The Sentinel Staff

LEESBURG - The banners that hang from the rafters in Ray Hayes Gymnasium at Leesburg High School speak to basketball tradition.

To state championships won.

To state runner-up seasons.

To 20-victory seasons.

Leesburg's basketball tradition is impressive.

And this season could be another one for the rafters.

Leesburg's boys team entered Friday night's game with Inverness Citrus in position to clinch the top spot in the Class 4A, District 5 tournament, which begins Feb. 15 at Lake Weir.

The Yellow Jackets (21-4) have clinched their seventh consecutive 20th-victory season and are ranked No.1 in the Sentinel Super 6 poll for Central Florida teams and No.4 in the Class 4A Florida Sports Writers Association poll.

Leesburg's girls (15-5) already have secured the No. 1 seeding in the Class 4A, District 5 tournament, which begins Wednesday night at Ocala Forest. The Yellow Jackets are ranked seventh in the Class 4A Florida Sports Writers Association poll.

Leesburg made it to the regional final last year before a loss to St. Augustine Nease, the eventual state champion.

No other school in the Lake and Sumter counties area can boast the kind of success that Leesburg's boys and girls programs have enjoyed this season.

Sure, Tavares' boys have spent almost the entire season ranked No. 1 in the Class 3A state poll and regularly make the Sentinel Super 6, but its girls team is about .500.

South Sumter's girls are ranked No.3 in the Super 6 and No.7 in the Class 3A state poll, but the Raiders boys have slumped somewhat recently and are also just a couple of games over .500.

``A lot of people look for a lot of reasons as to why we have been so successful,'' said Pat Todd, Leesburg's boys basketball coach. ``I think we just have good players. I think good players make coaches look a lot better than they are. I think [former coach) Mike Semanchik did a great job of getting this thing rolling and we have a great coaching staff.''

And chances of Leesburg's success ending any time soon are unlikely.

The Yellow Jackets' freshman team is 19-3 and its junior varsity team is 15-0. The jayvee team last year finished 15-1.

``The kids come onto the varsity team expecting to win,'' Todd said. ``It has been nice. The toughest thing, though, is can we keep it there? With the success we have, we have to make sure that the players keep on working to get better. We can't let them get to be complacent.
