LEESBURG - Marcel Thomas is leaving Leesburg High School after leading Leesburg to two State Championship Game Appearances. Thomas is leaving to coach boys basketball
for All Saints Academy of Winter Haven. All Saints Academy will be the fifth coaching job for Thomas during his career. Thomas was 67-46 in four seasons as head coach at Groveland South
Lake (2005-09) and is 191-108 for his career, including two stints in
Virginia. He will arguably go down as the greatest basketball coach in the history of Leesburg Basketball.

Thomas told reporters that he was no longer happy at Leesburg and the direction that the program was headed. He also said there was lack of support by the school's administration as reasons for leaving.
“I just wasn’t happy at Leesburg,” Thomas said on Thursday. “I love
the kids there. But the administration didn’t really embrace the success
that we’ve had as a program. It was time for me to pack up and go.”

Thomas led Leesburg to it's first state title in 34 years in 2011 and followed that performance with a return trip to the state championship game in 2012. He is only the second African-American Head boys basketball coach in the 94 year history of basketball at Leesburg. Legendary coach Hubert O. Dabney was the first African-American head basketball coach in the early 70's.
“They’re definitely going in the right direction as far as athletics,” Thomas said.

Thomas record is outstanding at Leesburg leading them to 20 win seasons in each of his three seasons at the helm. His record at the school is 72-20 during his tenure. What is impressive about this record is that he accomplished this playing one of the nations toughest schedules. Thomas brought back the swagger to Leesburg Basketball and he certainly will be missed by the Jacket Nation.

The Yellowjackets met stubborn resistance from the Orlando team that had greatly increased its strength, several ineligible men getting back into good graces after the recent examinations. The game was marked by roughness throughout, the poor light making smooth teamwork almost out of the question. Jimmy Rountree Leesburg guard, was unable to make the trip to Orlando, detained here though business associations. Rountree has been developing rapidly into a top notch player and fitted in well when Adams was out of the lineup due to illness.Gerald Laceyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13935573212745811209noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-43100224085965041.post-77474146794324127542013-05-18T09:22:00.000-07:002013-05-18T09:24:03.687-07:00Yellow Jackets Are Guests at Lions Club, Friday, March 20, 1936

Friday, March 20, 1935

LEESBURG - The Lions Club at their regular weekly luncheon were honored by having as their guests, the coaches and members of the high school basketball team, who represented this district at the State Tournament this year and were one of the semi-final teams. Lion Robinson, presiding in the absence of President McIrwin, extended a hearty welcome to both the coaches and all of the team members. Coach Ray Hayes responded by introducing his assistant Roy Hope, Manager Billy Masters, together with Frankenstein Phillips, Jim Girtman, Bill Girtman, Elmo Miller, Joe Knowles, Bethea, Jim Worrill, Jim Golden and Bill Davis, who made up this year's Yellow Jacket squad. Ned Searcy, the other valued member of the team was sick and unable to attend.

Coach Hayes deplored the fact that the school was unable to offer any training to the younger boys of the Junior High School to teach them the fundamentals of the different sports they might be fitted to take up on reaching high school. He stated that to be able to compete on an equal basis with the larger schools of the state, with many more athletic prospects than are available here, it is vital that some form of Physical Education and preliminary training be arranged for. He urged that this matter be given serious consideration so as to keep the standard of Leesburg athletes up to what they have been for the past several years.

Lion Robinson introduced the guests speaker of the evening, Karl Lehman, Secretary of the Lake County Chamber of Commerce, who warmly praised the coaches and members of the basketball team for the records they had compiled in the last few years against much larger schools throughout the state. Mr. Lehman cited many incidents gathered from the various cities over the state he has lately visited to show that Florida is now enjoying one of its best season since 1926. He gave facts and figures to show that in Miami and St. Petersburg, two of the largest tourist centers in the state, more rooms and apartments had been built than ever before and that practically all of them were filled this winter. He also pointed out that more expensive homes had been built and more property changed hands than in the last ten years. The Citrus display at Tampa Fair which won the Blue ribbon for Lake county in his estimation had caused the many citrus groves to be sold throughout the county. All of these sales he said, were made to northern people and he named many of these. He stated that all indications were for another boom for Florida without all of the speculation but much saner than the boom of 1926.

Gene Morris was welcomed into the club as a new member, while Ormund Powers of the Orlando Morning Sentinel was also a guest. The attendance contest which will run through the balance of this month, seems to be getting good results, this being the best attendance in several meetings.Gerald Laceyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13935573212745811209noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-43100224085965041.post-69627163778337007362013-05-08T15:18:00.003-07:002013-05-08T15:21:47.433-07:00Leesburg Cruises To Home Win Over Forest, December 15, 2006

Only the outstanding teams of the world are included in the list. So Leesburg should feel very proud of the Jackets and not only Leesburg but their whole state as well, should honor the Jackets and their Coach, Ray Hayes.Gerald Laceyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13935573212745811209noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-43100224085965041.post-70206994240397390352013-05-07T09:56:00.000-07:002013-05-07T09:58:41.987-07:00Yellow Jackets Cage Schedule Announced, January 3, 1936

Friday, January 3, 1936

LEESBURG - The 1936 basketball schedule for the Leesburg Yellow Jackets was announced this week by Coach Ray Hayes. The Jackets cagers will appear in seven home games and will take five trips. On the Jacksonville trip they will play Landon and Jackson, making a total of thirteen scheduled games.

The first home game will be played against Tavares next Friday at the high school gym. Leesburg successfully opened the season two weeks ago with a win over Tavares and hope to stop their county seat rivals again Friday. Following this game the local quintet plays the Ocala Wildcats on Tuesday, the 14th in the local gym. On the 17th the first trip is taken to Sanford.

The Northeastern conference championship, heretofore, has been decided during the regular season, but this year a tournament will decide the champion. This tournament will be held in Hulley gym in DeLand on January 31 and February 1. The regular schedule is then resumed and at its completion the fifth district tournament will be held, probably during the first week in March.

The outlook for the 1936 edition of the Jacket cagers is promising although the reserves are not as strong as in former years. Only five men have had previous experience and these five are all senior. "Shorty: Phillips heads the list, this being his fourth year of serve; Jimmy Girtman played a couple of years; and Joe Knowles, Ned Searcy and Elmo Miller had each had a year's experience. The offense will be built around Phillips, the Jacket's lanky center with Girtman and Searcy at the forward positions and Knowles and Miller at guards.

Other students out for basketball this year are Jimmy Worrell, Billy Davis, Jimmy Golden, Jimmy Herlong, Billy Girtman, Robert Farrell, George Andreu, Henry Williams, Henry Hardin, Billy Newett, Arthur Snyder, Teddy Hanford and others.Gerald Laceyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13935573212745811209noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-43100224085965041.post-80262197943841458312013-05-06T10:24:00.000-07:002013-05-06T10:24:11.721-07:00Jackets Travel, February 12, 1962

LEESBURG - Run, run, run has been the good word coming out of the Leesburg Armory these warm Autumn afternoons as Leesburg High Basketball Coach Jeff Bramlett rounds his squad into shape for their home opener against Mainland on Tuesday, December 5.

The Jackets with a 17 and 11 record last year had to be content with the runner-up spot in the Orange Belt Conference trailing Apopka and pre-season dopesters have picked them no better than third for this year. Coach Bramlett and the boys may have something to say about that, though, before the season is up.

Blessed with the return of lettermen Bill Arnold, Max Wettstein, Buddy Stone, Danny Shay, and Billy Stephenson the Jackets are also able to call on Larry Williams, Stan Gideons, John Gray and Mike Huey, as well as Sophomores Tommy Brown, Clell Coleman, and Pete Seng.
Arnold at 6ft. 4 in., and Wettstein and Stone at 6 ft. 1 in., give the Jackets adequate height while Shay is a hard driving forward and Stephenson is fast becoming the play maker the Jackets need for a successful season. Bill McBride, with a football injury, and David Herlong with an injured hand are expected to join the squad later. McBride is expected to join them after the first of the year in time for OBC competition, while Herlong is still a big question mark as for as the team is concerned.
made two foul shots and a driving layup to give the Yellow Jackets the lead each time.

The layup with 3:16 left in the game gave the Yellow Jackets a 71-70 lead they would not relinquish.

Leesburg forward Tyrell Rachel said when Bedford hit the two 3-pointers, he knew the game was going in Leesburg's favor.

``That just pumped it up,'' Rachel said. ``Jed's shots were big.''

Bedford finished with 18 points.

``When
I step on the court, I figure no one can stop me,'' Bedford said. ``I
knew they were in foul trouble, so I took it to the hole and knocked
down some big shots.''

Bedford had two early fouls in the first half.

''In the first half, I was in foul trouble, but I had to step up,'' Bedford said. ``I was too aggressive when I got the fouls.''

Todd said Bedford ``scores in bunches.''

``He
takes a lot of shots that are, `Oh no,' and `Oh yes,''' Todd said.
``But for all the mistakes, he plays with everything he's got. You have
to give the kid credit.''

Leesburg (9-0) is No.1 in The Orlando
Sentinel Super 6 and No.3 in Class 4A. Rachel and Jason Currington each
scored 19 points and Marlyn Bryant had 14.

``This makes a
statement,'' said Rachel. ``Some people thought this team would kill us.
We came here and showed them Leesburg can play.''
