KISSIMMEE - Leesburg's Jed Bedford stepped to the foul line with five seconds left on the clock and breathed a sigh of relief. The Yellow Jackets had just upset Georgetown (Ky.) Scott County in the first round of the Great Florida Shootout 85-77.

``I was just thinking about going back to Leesburg to start celebrating,'' Bedford said. ``This is the biggest win for the seniors.''

Bedford is the main reason Leesburg advanced to play the winner of today's battle between Duncanville, Texas, and Tucson Santa Rita, Ariz., on Monday at 4 p.m. at the Kissimmee Civic Center.

The 5-foot-10 senior guard took over the game late in the third quarter. The score was tied at 46 when Bedford swooshed two consecutive 3-pointers to give Leesburg a 52-46 lead.

``Coach [Pat Todd) tells me a lot of times I'm the key to the offense because I'm a senior,'' said Bedford, whose heroics helped Leesburg rally from an 11-point halftime deficit. ``I knew I had to make some big shots for us to get back in the game.''

As expected, Scott County - the No.2-ranked team in Kentucky - made a comeback. In a span of 37 seconds, Bedford made two foul shots and a driving layup to give the Yellow Jackets the lead each time.

The layup with 3:16 left in the game gave the Yellow Jackets a 71-70 lead they would not relinquish.

Leesburg forward Tyrell Rachel said when Bedford hit the two 3-pointers, he knew the game was going in Leesburg's favor.

``That just pumped it up,'' Rachel said. ``Jed's shots were big.''

Bedford finished with 18 points.

``When I step on the court, I figure no one can stop me,'' Bedford said. ``I knew they were in foul trouble, so I took it to the hole and knocked down some big shots.''

Bedford had two early fouls in the first half.

''In the first half, I was in foul trouble, but I had to step up,'' Bedford said. ``I was too aggressive when I got the fouls.''

Todd said Bedford ``scores in bunches.''

``He takes a lot of shots that are, `Oh no,' and `Oh yes,''' Todd said. ``But for all the mistakes, he plays with everything he's got. You have to give the kid credit.''

Leesburg (9-0) is No.1 in The Orlando Sentinel Super 6 and No.3 in Class 4A. Rachel and Jason Currington each scored 19 points and Marlyn Bryant had 14.

``This makes a statement,'' said Rachel. ``Some people thought this team would kill us. We came here and showed them Leesburg can play.''

GAFFNEY, S.C. – Senior center Phillip Moultrie (Southern Pines, N.C.) produced a career-game as Limestone (14-6, 10-4 CC) earned a hard fought 78-74 victory over North Greenville (7-10, 4-9 CC) in an NCAA Division II men's basketball game on Monday, February 4. The win keeps the Saints in second place in Conference Carolinas heading into a showdown for first place this weekend.

Moultrie was a man among men when it came to the glass as he shattered his career-high with 18 rebounds and made it a double-double with 10 points and added a pair of blocks for good measure in just 26 minutes of action. His previous career high of 13 came earlier this year at Coker on January 12.

Senior guard Mike Barrett (Virginia Beach, Va.) took care of the offense as he finished with 26 points on 10-of-19 shooting, including four threes, while junior guard PJ Foster (Leesburg, Fla.) added 18 points with four threes of his own. Senior forward Joe Raga (Lithia, Fla.) delivered another solid game as he had eight points, eight rebounds, four assists and three steals and senior forward Charles Blue (Corpus Christi, Texas) chipped in with five points and eight rebounds. MOUNT DORA — Lake Minneola, which opened its doors only a year and half ago, was born ready to play baskeball.

The Hawks (18-6) claimed local bragging rights in only their second season with a dramatic 53-48 win over state-ranked Leesburg (20-5) in Saturday night's Lake-Sumter Tournament final at Mount Dora Bible.

Anthony Brown took a pass from twin brother Avery and knocked down a clutch 3-point shot with 45.8 seconds to go give Lake Minneola a 49-48 lead and the push it needed to finish.

"I knew he was passing to me and I knew the shot was going in, we have that sync," Anthony said. "Leesburg beat us two times this season (and once in 2011-12), but we won the most important one."

The Yellow Jackets, state champions two years ago and Class 6A runner-ups last season, had a late chance to extend their 18-game winning streak. But Lake Minneola's Stephen Forbes drew a baseline charge with six seconds to go and Avery Brown sealed the deal with two made free throws.

"This is huge," said Lake Minneola coach Freddie Cole. "It gives our guys what they deserve for all the hard work they do in the offseason and behind the scenes."
"I think talent-wise, we're there with them. We had to be just as physical."

The Hawks, who are 13-2 in the New Year, jumped out to a 17-6 lead after Avery Brown (18 points, four blocked shots) dunked following a steal late in the first quarter. That advantage grew to 30-15 when Carlyle Holder banked a shot high off the glass with 1:28 to go in the first half.

Leesburg battled back with a 23-8 run and tied the game 38-38 on a follow-shot by Taj Lake.

East Ridge (21-6) prevailed in a 61-58 win over wounded MDB (18-7) in a third place in which workhorse seniors Josh Phillips of the Knights and Josh Ellis of the host Bulldogs both posted double-doubles.

Mount Dora Bible surged ahead 50-47 early in the final quarter on Zack Brock's seventh 3-pointer, but East Ridge answered with an 8-1 run that included treys by Erndona Noel and Austin  Mills.

The host Bulldogs were without forward Lamar Smith due to a bladder infection, then lost standout junior guard Zac Ward to an ankle sprain less than four minutes in. With districts next week Ward was sent to an ice bucket rather than back in to the game.

Mount Dora Bible coach Steven Hayes donned a surgical mask during timeouts to avoid spreading his flu bug.
