Class 6A Semi: Leesburg vs. Wolfson, March 2, 2012

By Rick Staudt

Source Hoops

Leesburg won the state 4A title last season.  With realignment and the expansion to eight classifications, they are now shooting for another state title, this time in 6A.  They take on a surprising Wolfson team out of Jacksonville.  Both teams won by one point in their regional final games.

Leesburg got the tap and their first possession resulted in a mid-range bucket by 6’2 junior Undra Mitchem.  After a turnover by both teams, Wolfson’s 6’2 senior Lucious Richardson scored in transition.  The pace was a bit slow as both teams seemed a bit nervous as they turned the ball over.  Joe Toolie of Leesburg knocked down a three to break the dry spell.  Wolfson continued to struggle from the field and when 6’4 senior D’Mauri Jones put back a missed shot Leesburg was up 7-2 with just over four minutes to play in the quarter.

Wolfson’s  6’2 junior Kerry White dropped in a three but that was answered by two free throws from 6’5 Leesburg sophomore Troy Willis.  Wolfson scored three straight points to get within one as 6’2 junior Jasper Sasser scored in transition and 6’0 senior Tommy Nelson hit one of two free throws.  Leesburg’s 6’1 junior Taj Lake dropped in a three to get the lead back to two possessions.  Richardson responded with a three for Wolfson but after Jones scored inside for Leesburg just before the end of the quarter, Leesburg led after one, 14-11.

Wolfson scored the first four points of the second quarter as 5’9 junior Jerome Thomas drove the lane for a basket and then Richardson beat every one down court for a score.  Leesburg called timeout now down one.  The Yellow Jackets answered with five points as Toolie hit a three and 6’0 senior Juliard Roberts scored on the break.  Richardson scored for Wolfson and Mitchum answered for Leesburg.

Thomas hit two free throws to once again get Wolfson back to within a basket.  Toolie knocked in a three for Leesburg to make it a two possession game.  Richardson again connected on two free throws for Wolfson but that would be the last points the Wolfpack would score in the quarter.

Leesburg would end it on a 6-0 personal run by Mitchum as he knocked down two mid-range jumpers and hit a floater in the lane as time expired.  At the half, Leesburg led 30-23.

Wolfson’s 6’2 junior Lawrence Taylor scored the first basket of the second half.  Leesburg’s Willis and Mitchum each connected on three point plays and Leesburg quickly had an eleven point lead.  A basket by Sasper and White got the margin down to seven but once again Mitchum came thru for Leesburg with tow buckets to grow the lead back to double digits with just under five minutes left in the third.

It looked bleak for Wolfson but surprisingly they went on an 11-4 run to close out the quarter.  Sasser hit one of two free throws and then Nelson knocked down a three.  Roberts of Leesburg scored in transition but then 6’0 senior Jayland Holloman connected on a three point play.  That was also Toolie’s fourth foul and he went to the bench.

Leesburg tried to slow things down without their main ball-handler but after Wolfson’s 5’8 junior Brandon Belton scored in transition and Nelson put back a missed shot, the lead was only two for Leesburg.  Willis of Leesburg got the last shot of the quarter to put the Yellow Jackets up by a score of 44-40 with one quarter to play.

Leesburg got the margin up to seven after a Mitchum jumper and Bisbee baseline drive were sandwiched around a free throw by Wolfson.  Thomas and Sasser each scored for the Wolfpack to make the margin three.  After two free throws by Roberts of Leesburg, Wolfson put together a 7-0 run as Richardson scored after a steal and Taylor knocked down a jumper and connected on a three point play. Now Wolfson held a one point lead at 52-51 with just over four minutes left.

After a dry spell for both teams, Leesburg’s Mitchum put the Yellow Jackets back up by one after an offensive rebound.  On the ensuing play, Richardson drove the ball and a foul was called on Willis.  It was his fifth foul and he reacted as a sophomore would to a questionable call.  Unfortunately he was tagged with a tech.  This game Wolfson a 1-and-1 opportunity, two technical free throws and the ball.  They missed the front end of the one-and-one, made both techs and scored quickly in the inbounds play.

Wolfson now had a three point lead with just under two minutes to go.  However, they couldn’t handle prosperity and Leesburg was able to turn the Wolfpack over and score points.  In less than a minute, Leesburg scored in transition and then scored after a steal.  Wolfson continued to struggle with the ball and turned the ball over on their final three possessions.

Forced to foul, Leesburg had their chances to ice it at the line.  However, they missed four straight free throws.  Wolfson could not get a good shot and Leesburg moves on to the 6A finals with a 57-56 win.
Mitchum led the way for the Yellow Jackets with eighteen points while Willis added eleven and Roberts put in ten.  For Wolfson only Sassed made double figures with ten points but eight different players scored.

Leesburg, Norland Advance To Title Game, March 4, 2012

Marty Pallman
Special to FlaVarsity.com

The Leesburg Yellow Jackets just keep on winning after a tough regular season slate. Now they are one win away from their second straight state title.

Leesburg, 4A champions a year ago, scored the final four points of the game to rally past Jacksonville Wolfson 57-56 this morning in the first Class 6A semifinal at the FHSAA Boys Basketball Finals in Lakeland.

Next up for Leesburg is the Miami Norland Vikings, who are looking for their third state title in 7 years themselves. Norland slipped by Winter Haven 46-37 in the second 6A semi.

Leesburg held Wolfson to 31 percent shooting in the first half and took a 30-23 lead into halftime. But Wolfson picked it up in the second half, shooting 46 percent and trailed the Yellow Jackets by only 4 going into the fourth quarter.

"We changed our defensive strategy at the half," Wolfson coach Bruce Rosebrock said. "Offensively we weren't doing what we wanted to do but it was time to be more aggressive on defense."

Wolfson actually had a 56-53 lead with a little over a minute to play, but Leesburg got two baskets in 11 seconds, the last one off a steal, to take the lead for good with 55 seconds left.

The Wolfpack (25-6) ran the clock all the way down to 5 seconds, but Lucious Richardson was called for traveling. Taj Lake then missed two free throws with 1.7 seconds left for Leesburg, but Wolfson could only manage an almost full court shot at the buzzer that missed wide left.

"We were looking to score not waste time there at the end," Rosebrock added. "I was hoping we would be more aggressive but it just didn't work out that way."

Wolfson, making it's first state semifinal appearance since 1999, was led by Jasper Sasser with 10 points and eight rebounds. It was a balanced attack for the Wolfpack as they had six player with eight points or more.

But Leesburg (20-9) will move on to try to follow up last year's 4A state title. Head Coach Marcel Thomas' Yellow Jackets played defending state champion Dwyer along with 4A state finalist Lake Highland Prep and 2A state champ Orlando Christian Prep on a very challenging slate this season. But it has brought this battle-tested team back to the state championship game.

Leesburg was led by Undra Mitchem with 18 points, Troy Willis added 11 and Jullliard Roberts chipped in with 10 points. All-State performer Joe Toolie also had nine points, five rebounds and four assists.

Norland goes for history with 46-37 win over Winter Haven
The second 6A semifinal wasn't as pretty offensively. But all the Miami Norland Vikings and coach Lawton Williams III care about is they are playing for their third state in seven years.

Norland shrugged off 30 percent shooting and held Winter Haven to 27 percent from the field as the Vikings beat the Blue Devils 46-37 in the second Class 6A semifinal at the Lakeland Center.

Norland held Winter Haven to 17 percent from the floor in the opening half but struggled themselves offensively and carried only a 20-14 lead into halftime.

Norland then moved out to a 26-15 lead midway through the third quarter, but a 10-0 Blue Devil run cut the Vikings lead to 26-25. At that point Williams took a timeout to settle his team down.

"I told them remember why you're here," Williams said. "We didn't play particularly well, but we're moving on."

Winter Haven actually took a 33-32 lead early in the fourth quarter, but Norland went on a 14-4 run the rest of the way.

Norland's Cleon Roberts led both teams with 22 points. He was the only Vikings player in double figures as Norland (28-3) also forced 10 Winter Haven turnovers.

"We had a couple of breakdowns in the third quarter and early fourth," Roberts said. "We just had to keep working and dig down deep and we did."

Norland, 6A state champions under in 2006 and 2008 under Williams, is trying to become only the fourth school in FHSAA history to win the state football and basketball titles in the same season. The others were Port St. Joe in 1971-72, Bradenton Southeast in 94-95, and Cocoa in 2008-09.

"Our athletic director is putting some pressure on us about that," Williams said with a smile.
Winter Haven's first appearance in the state semis since 2004 ended with a grinding loss. The Blue Devils (23-8) just really couldn't get anything going on offense.

"We brought in taller guys to practice to get ready for this big team," Winter Haven coach Tyrone Woodside said. "What you can't simulate is the atmosphere of a game like this."

Winter Haven was led by DeVon Walker with 13 points and 6 rebounds, while Chance McSpadden added 9 points and Kendrick Holland had 12 rebounds.

It's Leesburg and Miami Norland for the 6A state title Saturday afternoon at 1:35 at the Lakeland Center.
