State champion Leesburg is hungry to win its first title in 6A. The Yellow Jackets won their first ever in school history last year in Class 4A and will have their opportunity to do it in a new class on Saturday.
Leesburg skirted past Jacksonville Wolfson 57-56 in the semifinal game.
"The guys have been resilient all year," said Leesburg head coach Marcel Thomas.
Troy Willis picked up a technical foul for kicking the ball, after being charged with his fifth and final personal foul with 1:48 remaining, with Leesburg up 53-52.
The Wolfpack regained the lead after the sophomore's mental error and scored another bucket to be up by three. But senior guard Julliard Roberts brought the Yellow Jackets within one, hitting the go-ahead basket off a Brian Norflee steal to give Leesburg a 57-56 lead with 55.4 remaining.
"I just felt like I didn't want to go home," Roberts said after the game, who hit the two most clutch points in his high school career. "This is my last weekend ever playing with my brothers."
Roberts finished with 10 points, while Yellow Jackets guard Undra Mitchem led the scoring with 18 points. But his team was in danger of giving the game away midway through the fourth quarter. The Wolfpack's Lawrence Taylor took it hard to the hoop, was fouled and completed the three-point play to give Wolfson their first lead of the second half 52-51.
Leesburg will play for its second boys state basketball title in school history on Saturday afternoon at 1:30.
The game will be televised live on BHSN Ch. 47/1147.
