The Yellow Jackets Reached The Great Shootout Semifinals, While Osceola Lost To Cardinal Newman.
KISSIMMEE - Nationally ranked Duncanville, Texas, had a huge height, weight and wingspan advantage against Leesburg in the Kissimmee Rotary Great Florida Shootout basketball tournament Monday.
But for the unbeaten Yellow Jackets (8-0), quick feet and quicker hands are the body parts that count, along with internal intangibles.
``We keep running and play with our hearts,'' Leesburg guard Gerald Bedford said after scoring a career-high 36 points in an 84-73 quarterfinal victory over a team as tall as a Texas 10-gallon hat.
Leesburg, ranked first in the Sentinel Super 6 and second in this week's 4A state poll, will play No.5, Class 3A West Palm Beach Cardinal Newman (8-1) in tonight's 7:30 semifinal at the Kissimmee Civic Center. Newman benefitted from an Osceola collapse to score a 60-59 comeback win Monday on a 3-pointer by Greg Ollucci with 9.7 seconds remaining.
