Bryant Stars For Leesburg, January 25, 2000

Lake sports - ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

January 25, 2000|By Joe Williams of The Sentinel Staff
LEESBURG - Pat Todd and his Leesburg coaching staff have watched and been amazed by some of the things Marlyn Bryant does in practice.

At 6-foot-3, he can get his elbow above the rim while jumping flat-footed. As a freshman, he was easily completing dunking drills that 6-6 college players have trouble completing.

The spectacular has almost become the expected for Bryant.

Take, for instance, what Bryant did during a one-minute span late in the first quarter of Wednesday's game against Lake Mary. Four times in a row, Rams players tried taking the ball to the basket. Four times in a row, Bryant smacked away the shots.

Those blocks propelled Leesburg on a 10-0 run and a 29-14 lead early in the second quarter.

Before it was over, Leesburg coasted to an 89-69 decision with Bryant getting 27 points, 14 rebounds and the four blocked shots. It was the peak performance in the kind of week that has become almost common for Bryant, The Lake Sentinel's athlete of the week.
