Bryant As Surprised As Fans By His Quick Court Action

November 29, 1999|By Robert Pincus, Sentinel Correspondent

LEESBURG - When Marlyn Bryant has the basketball, Leesburg fans pay closer attention to the action, fearing they might miss another spectacular dunk from the 6-foot-3 junior.
What has been his best dunk to date?

Was it the slam on Saturday against South Lake, where a Leesburg player missed a shot and Bryant grabbed the ball in midair and stuffed it back into the rim while falling away? Or was it the one where Bryant rebounded the ball and used a drop step to jam it home?

If you ask Bryant, he'll tell you about a pump dunk he did last season against Eustis while surrounded by defenders.

``The defense came up and tried to block it,'' he said. ``I faked and dunked it. I was surprised I ever did something like that. My mom recorded the game and I was shocked when I saw it on tape.''

Senior point guard Tyrell Rachel was on the other side of the man who was dunked on.
``That was the best dunk I've ever seen,'' Rachel said. ``I was not expecting it.''
