Colton Signs With St. Johns River Cc

Coach Horace Jefferson Expects To Move Defensive Standout Sherwood Colton To Guard.

LEESBURG -- It is a common belief that college basketball coaches are impressed by lofty scoring and rebounding averages. But St. Johns River Community College Coach Horace Jefferson saw something different in Leesburg's Sherwood Colton.

Colton, a 6-foot-3 center for a Yellow Jacket team that made it to the Class 4A state semifinal, is one of three freshmen the Vikings will be signing for next year. Jefferson expects to move him to guard and take advantage of his defensive skills.

"First of all, I like his background,'' Jefferson said Thursday afternoon. "My initial intent is to have him come in as a defensive specialist, even though I know he can put the ball in the hole. I think it is a misconception that we don't play defense on the community-college level.''

Often matched on the inside against players much bigger, Colton had to learn defensive positioning to make up for the size mismatches he faced. Now, though, Colton will have to learn how to play away from the basket.
