Leesburg's Bryant Shines As Part Of Team And Dazzles With Dunks

To hear Marlyn Bryant tell it, you would think he simply is a role player in Leesburg's recent run of boys basketball success.

As a freshman, Bryant said he came off the bench to rebound and hustle. As a sophomore, he got more playing time. His junior year, he rebounded and kicked it back to the shooters. This past season, the 6-foot-4 senior was a role model for younger teammates. The Yellow Jackets went 106-27 in his four seasons and made many deep runs into the playoffs.

This season he also averaged 16.3 points and 8.5 rebounds on a young, small but balanced team that lost to state runner-up Belleview in a regional final. The numbers resulted in Bryant being named Florida Athletic Coaches Association 5A player of the year in Florida and MVP for the North in the North-South all-star game. For all those reasons, he is the Orlando Sentinel's Central Florida boys basketball player of the year.

Leesburg Coach Chad Keller is not surprised by Bryant's modesty. "He simply has no ego," Keller said. "He works tremendously hard. He's a sweet, good-natured kid. It's amazing he is the way he is, because he is worshipped around here.
