KISSIMMEE - The championship game of the 21st Annual Great Florida Shootout held true to its name Saturday night.

It was just that a shootout.

In the end, it was Class 5A Orlando Edgewater (14-0) who had the bigger guns as it defeated 4A Leesburg, 78-69, in front of more than 3000 fans, the largest single-game crowd in the history of the tournament.

The biggest gun was Eagles point guard Darius Washington, who scored a game high 34 points and was named the tournaments most valuable player.

The Yellow Jackets (12-1) were tied headed into the fourth quarter, but Edgewater went on a 10-2 run to start the period and Leesburg could never recover. They got as close as four at 71-67 in the closing minute, but the Eagles were strong at the free throw line, and the Yellow Jackets simply ran out of gas.

"They just made too many runs," Leesburg coach Chad Keller said. "But I'm very proud of our kids and the way they played, especially the bench."

The Yellow Jackets raced out to an early, 19-14 first quarter lead, but that was quickly erased by Washington, who single-handily scored 17 points in the second period to give Edgewater a 39-35 halftime lead.

Junior guard Travis Little scored 20 to lead Leesburg. Jarvieous Wright and Brandon Kelley added 17 and 10 each.

The Yellow Jackets struggled from 3 point range, as they only shot 17 percent going three-for-18. Foul trouble was also a major issue for two Leesburg starters.

Frances Cuyler and Brandon Kelley. Cuyler fouled out in the fourth quarter, while Kelley ended the game with four.

Orlando Edgewater head coach Travis Jones
Edgewater coach Travis Jones seemed more complimentary about Leesburg than he was about his own team.

"They're a great team," Jones said. "Chad (Keller, Leesburg coach) is doing a great job, and they really took advantage of their quickness."

"That's the best 4A team I've seen this season."

After the game, Keller was optimistic about the way his team has started their season.

"We have a lot of confidence going into the season," said the Leesburg coach. "We have no one taller than 6'2", and with everyone giving the effort they do, we're play very well."
