What a game it's going to be!
Saturday's Class 6A-Region 2 title game will pit one of the two oldest schools in Orlando -- Edgewater -- against one of the oldest schools in Lake County -- Leesburg -- with a berth in the FHSAA Final Four going to the winner.
The only drawback with the game is that it is being played in Orlando. When the brackets were originally drawn up following Tuesday's games, Leesburg was set to host the Eagles in the "Hive."
A late-night change by the Florida High School Athletic Association, however, turned the Yellow Jackets from a home team to road warriors.
Nonetheless, the matchup has all the makings of a classic -- the kind of game that gets talked about and broken down over coffee the morning after in area diners.
The game reeks of tradition. In fact, saying that both schools have tradition-rich programs is like saying Michael Jordan had a pretty nice jump shot.
Combined, the Yellow Jackets and Eagles have four state championship and have made eight title-game appearances.
Leesburg won its first state title in 1977 with a 71-51 victory against Marianna and nabbed its second last year against Fort Lauderdale Cardinal Gibbons. The Yellow Jackets finished second in 1929 and 1955.
