LEESBURG - Leesburg boys basketball second year head coach has his Jackets one win away from a second straight Final Four appearance. With a win Saturday night in the Class 6A Region 2 Final Leesburg will secure its 12th FHSAA Final Four appearance in the programs storied history. Leesburg is the defending Class 4A state champion, playing its first year in Class 6A.

Gainesville's playoff run ended with a 76-55 loss to the defending state champions Leesburg in the Class 6A, Region 2 semifinal Tuesday night at the Hive. It was the third time that the Jackets have defeated Gainesville this season. It was a 1-point game at halftime, and Gainesville even led in the third quarter, but a late 12-0 run helped Leesburg break away. Sophomore Troy Willis scored seven points during the stretch, and led the Yellow Jackets with 21 points on the night.

The defending state champs began pouring it on in front of the sellout crowd at the Hive, as Leesburg went on an 11-2 run at the start of the fourth quarter to put the game way and take a commanding 19 point lead with six minutes remaining in the game.
“We played some of the top teams in the state,” Gainesville head coach Kelly Beckham said. “Out of 10 losses all season, seven were by 4 points or less; the other three were to Leesburg. That tells me they’re ready to repeat.”

Hurricane freshman Ed Porter led the team with 17 points, but was mired in foul trouble in the second half.

Leesburg had four players scoring in double figures

The Yellow Jackets (20-9) are looking for their second straight regional title and a another trip to Lakeland site of the State Final Four.
